Playing for the Boston Celtics from 1950 to 1963, his behind-the-back passes and no-look dribbling were so far ahead of their time that coaches initially asked him to stop — believing the style was too risky. He led the league in assists eight consecutive seasons and won six NBA Championships. He was the most creative player of basketball's first professional era.
