Edgar Davids was nicknamed "The Pitbull" for his ferocious and uncompromising approach to midfield play. His acceleration, tenacity and exceptional ball-winning ability made him one of the most influential midfielders of the late 1990s. He played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe — Ajax, Juventus, Barcelona and Milan — and won 74 Netherlands caps. He wore distinctive protective goggles after a glaucoma diagnosis.
