Robbie Blake was the archetypal talented Championship player — skilful, direct and capable of moments of genuine brilliance. His hat-trick for Burnley against Manchester City in the League Cup demonstrated he could perform at the highest level. He made nearly 600 league appearances and won promotion to the Premier League with Burnley in 2009.
