Britain's last Wimbledon singles champion — Virginia Wade's 1977 victory in front of the Queen during Jubilee year is the most celebrated moment in British tennis history.

Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977 — the centenary of the championships, and in the Queen's Silver Jubilee year. Her victory over Betty Stove before a rapturous Centre Court audience remains the greatest moment in British tennis history. She won three Grand Slam singles titles and 55 international titles in total. She represented Great Britain in the Wightman Cup for 21 years.

She remains the last British woman to win Wimbledon — a wait for a successor that has now extended to nearly 50 years.
